The story in brief: George Orton and Lou Flynn are a couple of hired hands who do dirty deeds for bad people. I reviewed that slender volume ages ago for the now defunct Horror Reader website.Ĭut to a decade or more later, and Strand delivered an unexpected weird blend of werewolves, tough guys, mobsters, a road story, and Abbott and Costello with Wolf Hunt. That little ditty was paired with “Sex Potion #149,” which is also funny little slice of disturbance. Finish one story, flip the book over, start the next.

I first encountered that wee story as half of Funny Stories of Scary Sex, a chapbook from White Noise Press, which cleverly emulated the Ace Doubles books of the past. His short story “Werewolf Porno” is everything we could hope such a title could give us, a funny, gruesome tale about, well, a werewolf on a porno set. Strand is no stranger to imaginative takes on shifters, of course.

This month, we will explore the three books in the series thus far. Wolf Hunt is one of those books that kicked off as a single story, but it has since gained a couple of follow up works. For the most part, he writes standalone novels that explore a subject and then move on. There are the Andrew Mayhem thrillers, of course. Jeff Strand is no stranger to series, but he does not write much material in a series vein. If George and Lou want to save their careers, dozens of people, and their own lives, they need to recapture him. One who enjoys killing in human form as much as he enjoys killing as a monster. Unfortunately, Ivan doesn't play by the usual werewolf rules, and the thugs find themselves suddenly responsible for a viscous escaped beast. Their instructions are straightforward: Do not open the cage. It's just a simple transport job, albeit one that carrries severe consequences if they screw it up. George and Lou don't believe in the supernatural, but even if they did, it's daytime and tonight isn't the full moon. Though Ivan seems perfectly human, they're warned that he is, in fact, a bloodthirsty werewolf.

Their latest assignment is to drive across Florida to deliver some precious cargo to a crime lord. The kind of intimidating-yet-friendly guys who will break your thumbs but be nice about it.
